To create a fully credible QRG, one must gather a
lot of sources on the specific event, which is what I will now do. This blog
post will be about those ten sources, their credibility, information, and
overall purpose. So put those reading glasses on and away we go!
1. The first article is titled "Stamford vet at center of vaccination debate",
which is an article I mentioned previously in another post.
• This
source comes from Stamford Advocate which is a online newspaper for Stamford
Connecticut. This source seems credible since it has multiple links, sponsors,
readers and past credibility as well.
• The
author is John Nickerson who is an active breaking news reporter for the
Stamford Advocate and Hearst Connecticut Media Group. He did not seem as
credible as the other authors I've found because of his lack of bio, but he is
an active reporting, giving him a good amount of credibility.
• This
source came out the day before Valentine's day on Februaru 13th, 2013. 2013 was
the year of the Boston Marathon bombings and the death of Paul Walker, but
there wasn't anything too specific as to what would relate to
the article. Standing up for certain rights was a good year for that
because of the legalizing gay marriage debate happening in the United
States.
• This
source gives a lot of detailed information on the article and is very helpful.
This article has all the main stakeholders and then some. Overall, this is
a very good source to get information from.
2. The second article is a more broadened view on
the topic, titled "Controversy Over Vaccines".
• This
source comes from The Bark, a magazine online and in print about modern dog
culture. Basically everything about dogs that you could ever want to read
about, which makes it a perfect source if you ask me. On a more serious note
though, they seem to be credible having many past articles and notable staff.
• The
author is JoAnna Lou who is a woman who's work has been in DogSport, New
York Tails, and many other news sites. Her work seems to be credible, but
she is listed as a blogger, so her posts may be slightly more biased than
others.
• This
source came out in February 22, 2013 which was, again a time of advocating for
what you believe in, so it was a time of a supportive environment for the main
stakeholder, John Robb to speak out about over-vaccination.
• This
source talks more about the debate between the vaccination of pets, including
John Robb, but in a more broader sense where people are worried about the large
amount of debate. However, it is still a valuable article to get the
broader view of the topic down.
3. The next source comes from a podcast
titled "Pet Vaccines with Guest Dr. John Robb"
• This
podcast is done by a radio group called Angry Beaver that is based out of
Canada and is still broadcasting every Saturday from 3-5pm. This seems like a
credible source because they are directly interviewing and talking with
the main stakeholder, Dr. John Robb, and continually broadcast.
• The author
is Angry Beaver and John Robb who are directly speaking to their audience
which, again seems to be a credible source because it is coming first hand
from their own beliefs.
• The
source came out much later than the previous two in August 28, 2014
which again is another year where self advocacy is very prominent. It
is also a who year after John Robb got fired and banned from his place of work,
yet he still believes in what he did, which is good to note.
• The
source talks more about John Robb's opinions on over-vaccination rather than
the event of 2013, but it is still useful and credible information because it
is talking about the broader problems and why the event actually happened.
4. The next source we will be looking at is titled,
"Veterinarian John Robb Challenges Banfield and PetSmart
on Rabies Vaccination".
• This
article comes from the Dogs Naturally Magazine (Online Version) with a slogan
"the magazine for dogs without borders". The work seems very biased
towards dogs because it is a representation of vets, breeders, trainers,
and pet owners. It is a magazine dedicated, in part, to bring justice 'against
the misguided standards of the pet health industry'.
• All of their
authors do the work collectively, so there is no one author, so it seems a
little less credible, but at the same time, their unique collective writing
style allows for more peer edits which allows for some credibility.
• There are
also no dates of posting because it tends to be general news that people should
read at all points, but we can assume that it was released around
the other articles I found in 2013 because that was the time of the large
debate.
• This
article speaks more of the individualized details of John Robb's opinions on
Banfield and how they are over-vaccinating. It represents mostly the
stakeholders who believe in the over vaccinations and is important in giving
insight to that particular side.
5. This next source
is about John Robb and the court case against D.V.M. and Banfield, The Pet
Hospital.
• This
article comes from dogfriendly.com where it updates people on news
happening in the pet world. It is a little more simple than the other sites and
doesn't seem to have much background on the site which is a little less
credible.
• There is
no author listed and no collective of authors like the last article so this
also makes it hard to assess the credibility of the site and of the author.
• This was
posted March 9th of 2013, which is much like the other articles, so it can
be inferred that they offer updated and relevant news like the other
sites. This is a little bit later than the others so it might have updated
information on the event.
• The
article focuses on how John Robb filed a law suit and how the
over vaccination debate sparked which is very important because it also
speaks about the counter stakeholder to John Robb.
6. The next source is titled, "Protect the Pets" which is
a transcribed article from a podcast.
• The
podcast comes from The Robert Scott Bell Show that is on every day at various
times. It looks like a very credible website and an even more credible
podcast because of the vast amount of listeners and his appearance on many
TV news networks.
• The
author is Robert Scott Bell and he seems to be a very credible source of information
and tends to talk about all different types of healing that seem to be very
popular. He has no specific degree but he has overcame numerous chronic
illnesses and has learned a lot about health, giving him good credibility.
• The
podcast was done February 20th 2013 which is, again, like the other articles I
found due to the event with John Robb happening so close to that date.
• The
podcast seems to be directed at getting people passionate about what John Robb
has to say, even offering them a time to protest with John Robb. This is
important to my project because it gives the passion that I want in
my QRG.
7. The next article is a page titled, "News",
which are letters and emails sent from and to John Robb from the hospital he
worked at and PetSmart.
• This
article is from an internet site called Protect the Pets that seems to be
credible because it is basically a timeline of events starting from the start
of John Robb speaking out against his own company and workplace.
• There is
no author of sorts because it's not really an article, its a compilation
of emails and letters written, so the sources are very credible.
• The
compilation was done in December of 2012, when John Robb was
originally fired from his job for claiming that there was over vaccination.
During this time it was around Christmas so there was probably an influx of
pets coming into the hospital, so he probably found the over-vaccinations to be
more prominent.
• The site
itself seems to be a sort of rallying website to others who have his same views
on the over vaccination and a timeline of events. It shows letters
from many of the key stakeholders in the event so it is important information
for the QRG.
8. The next article is from a more medical
prospective and a general take on vaccinations titled, "Are You Over-Vaccinating Your Pet?"
• This
article is from an Australian based internet site titled "Choice". It
seems to be a credible source of information because it has a wide expanse
of topics and frequently updates its topics.
• The
author of this article is Cecilia Lee who I couldn't find much information
about. It had her picture on the article but not much else. She has written
other articles for the choice, so it seems likely that she would be a good
source to gain information from.
• The
article was last updated August 28th 2014 which is the most recent article I
found thus far. Consequently, this leads some insight to how the debate is
being seen in the more present day time.
• The
article talks about a general view from the medical perspective about how much
your pets should be vaccinated. It speaks about the past and present views
on over-vaccination globally which is important in understanding the accepted
view on vaccinations.
9. The second to last article I found is titled,
"Over-Vaccination. Pet Owners Beware"
• This
source was found on the site called "The Whole Dog Journal" which is
an online journal that talks a lot about dog health, nutrition, behavior, and
more. It seems like a credible source due to its popularity
and extremely well-throughout out internet design.
• The
author, Lisa Rodier, however was extremely hard to find anything on. The
only source of credibility that I can name comes from the multiple
articles she wrote which shows that she continues to be trusted to relay
information.
• The
article was released in August of 2010 which is another early article, giving a
persepctive on what people thought before the 2013 event.
• The
article talks about how you should educate yourself before you listen to the
vets giving out the vaccinations and speaks about being cautious when keeping
your pet healthy. This is an important source because it offers thoughts
before John Robb spoke out.
10. The last source I found was another general
look at over-vaccinations from a medical perspective titled, "To Vaccinate or Not: A Vet's Perspective".
• This
article is done by petMD which is one of the most credible internet sources out
there as it is written and peer reviewed by those in the veterinary
science practice.
• The
author of the piece, T. J. Dunn, Jr., DVM,
seems to be a very well known veterinary science writer and has written
countless articles pertaining to that subject. He seems to be credible and
offers and comments advice to those who ask questions after he posts.
• The
article doesn't have a date to see when it was published, but it still holds
credibility as it is a general information type of article.
• The
article speaks on the more medical/veterinarian side, speaking
of vaccinations in general, addressing the issue of over
vaccinations. This is an important source because it offers another opposing
view of John Robb's.
